Cumberland Community Day

Gwyn Sproule from Cumberland Village Council led a fantastic hike on community trails, passing by areas of great historical significance. Cumberland was once the home of one of the largest Asian communities (Chinese and Japanese) in British Columbia - their members working at local coal mines. The Comox and District Mountaineering Club was very well represented at the day, along with members of the general public, Mayor Fred Bates and David Durrant, the Manager of Community Services. The trails we hiked are also part of a magnificent network of mountain bike trails.

Andrew Pape-Salmon presented a short-term vision for a continuous trail from the Campbell River dam (near Strathcona Park Lodge) to Strathcona Provincial Park, across Forbidden Plateau and on existing mountain bike trails across private lands into Cumberland. He noted that this might attract international tourists seeking wilderness treks who currently limit their sights to Banff/Jasper, Whistler/Pemberton or the West Coast Trail. This would be part of the VI Spine Trail project, extending north to Cape Scott and south to Victoria via Port Alberni and Lake Cowichan.
